Wild Turkey and Coke
It’s easy to get into a rut with drinking. Most people order and make the things they are familiar with. But the universe of spirits is vast and changing up just one ingredient can make a world of difference.
When it comes to whiskey, one of the most popular drinks made is Jack and Coke. Jack Daniels is the best-selling whiskey in the world and its paring with Coca Cola is as standard as peanut butter and jelly.
Jack Daniels gets a lot of love and adoration for good reason–it’s a soft, easy, and affable whiskey. Because Jack Daniels is a Tennessee whiskey, it goes through an additional step over other whiskeys: a charcoal mellowing (aka filtering) process which helps give it a lighter and softer style. Jack Daniel’s smooth and easy style marries well with cola and together they mesh beautifully.
But Jack Daniels isn’t the only great whiskey that’s good in Coke, and changing things up in such a simple drink really illustrates the dramatic impact that using different brands can have on a drink.
Like Jack Daniels, Wild Turkey is one of the great whiskey brands of the world. Unfortunately Wild Turkey often doesn’t get the same level of love and adoration as Jack Daniels, even though it’s every bit as good a whiskey. For some reason Wild Turkey has gotten the reputation as being strong, harsh or macho, when really it’s a beautiful balance of vanilla and caramel sweetness, and cinnamon spice. The big difference is that Wild Turkey 101 has more alcohol than Jack Daniels (51% vs. 43%). Ultimately this means you are getting more bang for your buck.
The higher alcohol content also means that it stands out brighter when you dilute it. Like Jack Daniels, Wild Turkey is fantastic in Coke. The vanilla and caramel flavors along with the cinnamon spice blend extremely well with the sweet cola flavors. The big difference is that the flavors of the Wild Turkey don’t get as lost in the Coke as in Jack Daniels.
Wild Turkey also has a new product on the market called Wild Turkey 81 which is a slightly lower proof than their Wild Turkey 101 and was designed specifically for mixing. It too goes exceptionally well with Coke and provides a nice alternative to Jack.
It’s surprising how perceptions about certain spirits get formed, and the only way to really know what you like is to experiment and taste different spirits. One of the best places to start is in something easy and familiar like a Jack and Coke.
