Macallan Scotch Pairing, Gourmet Tasting Dinner

Macallan Scotch Pairing, Gourmet Tasting DinnerWhat’s with wine getting all the glory when it comes to dinner beverage pairings? I’d say nine times out 10, prix fixe dinners always offer the optional wine pairing. I eat at these things a lot, so I’m always left wondering why can’t I imbibe a lovely, perfectly paired beverage that is not of the grape variety.

Well, it seems I’m not the only person with similar notions. Hotel Angeleno’s WEST restaurant has the perfect answer: Scotch is the new wine! Long gone are the days of its single associate to the picturesque Mad Men figure. You don’t even have to be a chain-smoking, oil man to enjoy this alluring, complex drink. Coupled with a brand-spanking-new tasting menu and arguably the best views of Los Angeles, this is one tasty, scotchy dinner you can’t miss.

Situated atop the penthouse level of Hotel Angeleno (the unmistakable cylindrical hotel on Sunset and the 405), WEST restaurant boasts an inventive, highly market-driven menu, rotating ever-changing seasonal dishes.

This upcoming Saturday on October 6 at 6:30 p.m., WEST has joined forces with Highland Distillers to offer a four-course dinner, each paired with a different Macallan’s perfectly aged scotch. (You read right: Macallan’s!) You’ll taste a 10-year and all the way up to an 18-year aged scotch. That’s pretty impressive. Plus, if you’re anything like me (a scotch novice, but intrigued pupil), Highland Distillers’ own Martin Daraz, brand ambassador, will be right there with you to explain the many complexities of the liquor, as well as the differences between the vintages.

In terms of the food, wrap your head around this: oysters with passion fruit gelle and lavender start you off. It’s followed by a grilled peach salad with blue cheese mousse and upland greens (you know how much I love savory peach applications!) The third course is a lovely meat-and-potatoes redux with hangar steak and twice-baked potatoes. And to finish off, the menu boasts a sundry of domestic cheeses with all the fixings. Now, I don’t want to give away all the delectable details, so you’ll just have to go see for yourself.

Tickets are only $49 for all four courses and the scotch pairings. You’d spend at least that much at any local watering hole just for the booze and not including the amazing meal. I’m telling you, folks, that this dinner for this price is pretty much a steal. You bet your tipsy-self that I’ll be there, probably the one in the corner who will be gushing over the beautiful plating, the inventive flavor pairings, and the scotchity scotch scotch.

The event itself is on Saturday October 6 at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are available through eventbrite. There is limited seating, so I highly advise purchasing tickets immediately as the place will sell out. Their previous tequila pairing dinner sold out in a heartbeat. And before heading out, read up on Macallan Distillers and WEST.

WEST is located on the 17th floor of Hotel Angeleno on 170 N. Church Lane in Los Angeles.
